More accurately, the 7×10 is really a 7×8. Measuring from the base of the headstock to the end of the bed, the 7×10 is 15 1/2″ and the 7×12 is 19 1/2″. While 4″ may not seem like much, in practice it makes a big difference. This is because the 7×10 version provides about the minimum possible length that can still make a functional lathe.

Overwhelming advice from the dozens of machinists I interviewed (yes, literally dozens) was: RF45 was the best choice for being able to take on major projects and hold tolerances, but all 3 of them were limiting in terms of size.

I have a manual Sieg SX3L with Sk30 Spindle Taper. TL;DR: Good machine, needs some out of the box improvements to become a great machine for its size. Would recommend for a beginner if in good shape. To echo u/Ax3L_S a bit, out of the box they are "ok". Aluminium, Plastics and the like won't give you any problems.

Power table feed for the the SIEG X2 class of mini mills (small table) including Harbor Freight 44991 and Grizzly G8689. This power feed mounts on the left end of the mini mill's table and drives the Xaxis feed screw. It is variable speed (0 to 20 inches per minute). The mini mill power feed kit takes about two hours to install.

The use of the Power Feed also greatly improves the surface finish. My only issue with Sieg's power feed is that at it's slowest feed rate, it is still too fast for use with a 100mm Fly Cutter. The Second modification I made to the was to install a Two Axis DRO. A very useful addition to the mill.

Imagine if, instead of a nice smooth flat gib strip, the ways on the mill table axis were held in tight tolerance instead by only the tips of the gib screws themselves against the ways. That's essentially what SIEG did on this acme nut. The X2 Y axis nut looks like an inverted tombstone. The threads for the screw are toward the rounded end.
